If you’re looking for a fun and creative way to involve the kids in gardening, making wooden spoon garden markers is a fun project that combines crafting with learning about plants.
May and June are always such busy months for us. The end of school, preparing for summer, birthdays. There is never much time for the things I and my kids love – gardening. Well I should say, I love to garden and they love to play with the hose.
Out of all my kids, Miss N is the one that loves being out in nature planting the most.
This year we decide to do more planting of herbs and veggies. Immediately after planting I realized that we needed to have markers for all the things we planted and the labels they came with from the store were not going to do.
I saw this adorable idea on Pinterest where they used wooden spoons as markers in the garden. Such as simple and adorable idea I knew I had to try it.
We got our wooden spoons from the dollar store. A pack of three was only $1.25 making this craft super affordable. But the results were absolutely amazing! They made such an amazing addition to our garden, I can’t wait for us to create more!

Materials for Wooden Spoon Garden Markers
How to Make Wooden Spoon Garden Markers
- Grab your wooden spoons and start to paint the tops of the spoons with the patio or outdoor paint. You will want your garden markers to be able to withstand the elements. We used patio paint to achieve this. If you don’t have patio paint, acrylic paint will do but you will need to seal it with and waterproof sealer especially if your garden is out in the open.
We painted the spoons different colors to represent the different herbs and vegetables that we were growing. Orange for carrots, yellow for squash, green for the herb. Choose colors that reflect what you are actually planting.
- Set the spoons aside to dry. Once they are fully dry, use a sharpie to dry a picture of the herb or veggie you are planting. It doesnt need to be perfect. Then write the name of the item. I found having the seed package in front of them while they were creating helped a lot. They were able to draw the picture of the item and see how to write it as well.
Use the black sharpie to draw the items. Use the green sharpie or Posca paint markers to add the green leaves!
- And you are done! Super easy and a great little garden project for kids! And they looked amazing in our garden!!
