The age-old adage “breakfast is the most important meal of the day” rings most true when you have some favorites on the menu. And few breakfast staples are more beloved than waffles. A warm waffle with a crispy exterior and pillowy interior is enough to get anyone out of bed. The only downside to the breakfast food? Waffles can easily become soggy.
But if there’s one person who knows the ins and outs of how to make a perfect waffle, it’s Martha. To ensure your waffles have a deliciously crisp outside every time, Martha took to TikTok to share her tip for preventing soggy waffles. “Soggy waffles no more!” she says.
In the video, Martha starts by pouring batter into her waffle maker. Once the waffle is done cooking, she begins tossing it from one hand to the other. “Take the waffle out of the maker and toss them back and forth to let the steam escape,” she says. “It helps make sure that the crispiness of those edges is retained.”
If you’re making waffles ahead of time, this is also a great way to ensure they heat up nicely later. In our One-Bowl Buttermilk Waffles recipe, we recommend tossing the cooked waffles back and forth then letting them cool completely on a wire rack. Once they’re cool to the touch, place the waffles into resealable bags in single layers and freeze. When you’re ready to enjoy them, they’ll be just as crispy as the day you made them.
