Scented Pumpkin Pie Craft with Cotton Ball Whipped Cream

2 scented paper plate pumpkin pies with cotton balls and pom poms for whipped cream

This Scented Pumpkin Pie Craft is painted on a paper plate “crust” and topped with dollops of cotton ball or pom pom “whipped cream”. It’s the perfect fun and easy Thanksgiving craft for toddlers and preschoolers.

The other day we made a pumpkin pie craft with puffy paint whipped cream on top and a paper plate pumpkin pie with puffy paint pie filling. Those were super-cute, but it got me thinking about teachers and parents who aren’t permitted, or prefer not to use shaving cream for kids’ crafts.

Cotton balls were the obvious and easy alternative. When you pull and stretch a cotton ball, it looks almost exactly like a dollop of whipped cream.

Then I thought about the fact that some kids and adults can’t stand the feel of cotton balls, so I rifled through the craft cupboards for another alternative.

White tissue paper would be a good one, but believe it or not, I didn’t have any on hand, so we opted for white pom poms.

They look like little dots of whipped cream, right?

Like our other pumpkin pie craft, we scented our paint with pumpkin pie spice, which added a nice cinnamon colour to our paint and made our craft smell oh-so-lovely.

So now you have options for topping for your kids’ pumpkin pie crafts this Thanksgiving. 🙂

Keep your eyes on the blog… we have one more pumpkin pie craft coming up before Thanksgiving. This time, we’ll be using home-made puffy paint for the filling.

Pumpkin Pie Craft with Cotton Balls or Pompoms

Supplies:

  • paper plate
  • orange and brown paint
  • pumpkin pie spice
  • paint brushes
  • glue
  • cotton balls or white pom poms

How-To:

  1. Paint the rim of the paper pate with brown paint. This will be the crust of your pie.
  2. Mix together some orange paint and a pinch of pumpkin pie spice. If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice, you can just use ground cinnamon, nutmeg or cloves.
  3. Fill in the rest of the plate with this paint/spice mixture.
  4. With a pencil, draw lines on your pie to divide it into 6 slices. Have your child paint over these lines with brown paint and a fine paint brush.
  5. Finish by gluing a cotton ball (stretched and fluffed) or a few pom poms to each slice of pie.
