- Bird seed (make sure to get birdseed that your local birds enjoy)
How to Make A Popsicle Stick Bird Feeder
For this project we used a glue gun, but if you’re doing this idea with younger children, using regular school glue works just as well but will take some time to dry. Just remember that this bird feeder will need to be brought back inside when it starts raining.
- Start by building the base of the bird feeder. Place six jumbo craft sticks side by side to create the base. We decided to make our bird feeder using the colors of the rainbow so we started at the end of the rainbow with purple. Start by gluing two purple sticks to the top and bottom of the base to hold it tougher. Next, glue two other sticks on the other two sides, over lap your popsicle sticks to create a square base. Glue the ends together.
- Create the bird perch. Glue a stick on one side in the middle to create the bird perch. Then glue two sticks on either side to make the next layer of the feeder. Then glue two more sticks on the other side to create
- Continue creating each layer of the feeder by gluing the sticks around the together to create the square. Continue until you use all the colors of the rainbow. We ended at red.
- Adding the string. Cut out four pieces of string that equal in length about 2 feet. Bring them together and tie a knot in the middle. Begin to tie the other ends to the corners of the bird feeder. You can do this by sliding the ends through the top craft stick and creating a knot on top. You want each string to be the same length so that the weight of the bird feeder is evenly distributed. This will make it easier when you hang it up on a tree branch.
- Time to find the perfect tree branch to hang it. Once the feeder is hung securely you can carefully add your bird seed. Then head in doors and watch from a window to see what types of birds visit your feeder daily.
Tips
- Don’t add too much seed.
- Be sure to place your bird feeder where you can watch if from a safe distance.
- Use bird seeds that your local birds will enjoy.
