Monarch Butterfly Mobile Craft for Kids

Fluttering Monarch Butterfly Mobile for Kids to Make - Happy Hooligans

This monarch butterfly mobile is an easy craft for kids to make in fall when monarchs are preparing to migrate south. It’s fun to watch these monarchs fluttering in the breeze, and they’ll look so pretty hanging on a porch or in a sunny window in your home or classroom.

Yay! I have another beautiful monarch butterfly craft for your kids to make this fall!

We made this pretty monarch butterfly mobile using the coffee filter monarchs that the kids made last week. We’ve hung it on our back deck and it looks so lovely when the butterflies dance in the breeze with the sun shining through their wings.

Originally, when we made our monarchs, we hadn’t planned to turn them into a mobile, but they looked so beautiful pinned around our garden that we wanted a way to permanently display them here in our home daycare.

The kids love making mobiles and garden ornaments to hang in the yard, so for now, our mobile is hanging from the rafters of our covered deck, but we’ll move it indoors and hang it in our playroom for winter.

I just love how delicate these monarchs look. They really do flutter when the breeze catches them, and their wings look so vibrant when the sun shines through them.

Check out how pretty they are in this video:

This mobile is really easy to make. Below, is a link to the how-to for the monarchs, so pop over and get those if you like, before making your mobile.

Supplies need to make our monarch butterfly mobile:

  • Coffee filter monarch butterflies (see the how-to here)

Making your mobile:

To start, make your coffee filter butterflies. Use the link above to to get the instructions, or follow this visual step-by-step:

When you have all of your monarchs made, send the kids out to the yard to find a couple of sticks.

Have the kids paint the sticks black and let them dry in the sun for a bit.

When the paint is dry, make an X with your sticks.  Secure them in place by wrapping a long length of black yarn around them where they intersect.

Attaching the yarn to your monarch butterflies:

Next, you’ll need to glue long lengths of yarn to your butterflies so you can attach them to the sticks.

This is easy to do with a hot glue gun. Just add a dab of hot glue inside the open end (the end that you pinch) of your clothes peg and carefully press the end of a piece of yarn into it. Your butterflies are now ready to attach to your mobile.

Attaching the monarchs to your mobile:

Tie a butterflies to the ends of the sticks and then hang a few more mid-way down the sticks. You can even hang two monarchs together like we did for the centre of our mobile.

How to hang your mobile:

To make a hanger for your mobile, tie a length of black yarn to each stick. Gather those 4 strands of yarn together at the top, and hold them together. Hold the mobile up so the butterflies are dangling freely, and adjust the lengths of yarn until your mobile is balanced.

Knot the 4 strands together, and your mobile is ready for hanging.

Now, find a place to hang your monarch mobile where a gentle breeze can make your monarchs flutter and spin.
