Monarch Butterfly Craft with Painted Coffee Filters

Painted Coffee Filter Monarch Craft = Happy Hooligans

Kids ages 2-10 will love this beautiful monarch butterfly craft. It’s fun and easy, and the finished butterflies look so real!

In the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen a real increase in the number of monarch butterflies in our yard as they prepare for their fall migration to Mexico. The hooligans just love to see them flitting about and resting on the flowers in our garden.

The other day, we thought it would be fun to make a monarch butterfly craft here in the daycare. Now, we’ve made butterflies before, but we’ve never specifically made a monarch craft, so this was a first, but boy-oh-boy, the results were fantastic!

Edited to add: after making these monarchs we made more with liquid watercolours and coffee filters. They’re gorgeous too. You can check them out here.

Coffee Filters and Acrylic Paint

We made these monarchs by painting coffee filters with acrylic craft paint. You could use poster paint or whatever kid-friendly paint you have on hand.

Or Liquid Watercolours

You could also use liquid watercolours like we did when we made these monarchs (which are also incredibly beautiful).

Our monarchs are are so vibrant, and they look so real that we placed them around the yard and garden to photograph them.

Clip them to display them

The clothespin body made it easy to clip the butterfly onto the plants and our garden bench. Indoors, your child could clip them to the curtains.

Check out how beautiful they look resting on the shrubs and and various ornaments in our garden.

Doesn’t it look like a true kaleidoscope of butterflies has taken over our yard?

Make a monarch mobile

We ended up turning a bunch of ours into a gorgeous mobile to hang in the playroom.

Making these monarchs couldn’t be any easier! Kids as young as 2 can do this craft, but even the 10 and 12 year olds will love it because they’ll get a chance to really get creative with their wing design.
