Fall Leaf Lacing Cards for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Homemade fall leaf lacing cards for toddlers

Here’s a fun fall activity for toddlers and preschoolers. Turn coloured paper or wallpaper samples into a fall leaf lacing activity to help young children strengthen their fine motor skills and learn some early sewing skills.

We’re all about Fall Leaves this month here in my daycare, so we’ve been making lots of leaft crafts and doing fun activities with leaves in the backyard.

Recently, I made these Fall Leaf Lacing Cards for my toddlers and preschoolers to practice their lacing skills with.

Many of you already know how much I love my wallpaper samples. For those of you who are new around here, I’ll fill you in.

I asked at a couple of local paint and paper shops and they were happy to give me several expired wallpaper sample books. For FREE! They throw them in the garbage when they’re done with them, so get on in to your local shop and ask if you can take some off their hands!

Wall paper samples are perfect for all kinds of projects and activities and the fact that you can get them for free is a whole lot better for the budget than buying pricey scrap-booking paper.

How to make our Fall Leaf Lacing Cards:

  • wall paper samples
  • thin cardboard
  • hole punch
  • paper scissors
  • glue
  • shoelace

Making our Leaf Lacing Cards:

To make these leaf lacing cards, I traced 3 different leaf shapes on to some fall coloured samples, cut them out and glued them to some sturdy cardboard.

A cereal box would be the right weight of cardboard for this.

Use a hole punch to make holes all around the edges of the cut-outs, and provide some shoe-laces (or a child’s sewing needle and yarn) for lacing!

That’s it, that’s all!

The hooligans loved these lacing cards.

When one little guy was finished, he had the bright idea to turn his into a kite, so they all joined in and ran around the yard, trying to get their fall leaves to fly in the breeze. 🙂
