My husband and I spent the winter working and living at the Grand Canyon. I was inspired by the stars and the beautiful pine trees that surrounded us. I have lots of beautiful photos, but needed a lovely frame to set them off.

How to Create a clay picture frame:

Use a craft knife to cut shapes out of rolled out air dry clay.

Cut out embellishments

Roll out a small piece of the air dry clay on a flat surface, about 1/4″ thick.

The frame that I created is a mixture of trees and stars. I had two small cutters to cut out the stars and smaller trees. I used a craft knife to hand cut the larger trees.

Shapes of trees and stars cut from air dry clay.

Air dry clay dries quickly, so once all of the pieces are cut out, move directly to the next step.

Add some glue to the frame and place cut pieces of air dry clay in place.

Add some Fevicol glue to the area that you would like to place an embellishment and put the clay piece in place.

All cut pieces of air dry clay are glued in place.

Once all of the embellishments are in place, go to the next step.

Use the end of a paintbrush or any tool to add texture to the air dry clay.

Adding Texture to the embellishments

Before the air dry clay can dry, add texture to each piece. Use the end of a paintbrush, or any other tool to create shapes and textures within each air dry clay piece. These textures will add a ton of personality later.

Allow the air dry clay to thoroughly dry.

Allow the Air Dry Clay to dry

It takes several hours for the air dry clay to completely dry. You will know that it is dry when it turns a bright white.

The frame can be finished as it is right now, or you can go on and add color.

Paint the background and edges of the frame.

Painting the Frame

Begin adding color with acrylic paints. Begin with the background, leaving the stars and moon white.

Paint the trees using various shades of green.

Use several different shades of green for the trees and vines. Be sure to get into the crevices with the paint so that there are no white spaces showing.

All areas of the frame have been painted.

Allow the acrylic paint to dry before going to the next step.

Add a wash of black paint to bring out the textures. Finish with flecks of white paint for stars.

Add a wash and stars

For the black wash, add black acrylic paint to about a tsp of water. Mix thoroughly and then brush over the frame, allowing the black to go into the crevices. This will bring out the textures! Use a damp cloth to wipe off any excess black paint before it dries.

To add the small stars, dip the bristles of the toothbrush in a small amount of paint and position it over or near the frame. Then, pull back the bristles to create a fine mist.

Create a picture frame embellished with air dry clay.

The finished piece is a fun work of art, perfect for framing your favorite photo!
