Gather Your Supplies

Before you begin this exciting project, make sure you have all the necessary supplies. The good news is that most of the items you’ll need are likely already in your art supplies stash or kitchen pantry. Here’s what you’ll need to gather:

Draw Your Design

You don’t have to be an artist to make a beautiful suncatcher! I have some tracing sheets that would be perfect to create with! I also have some butterfly outlines here! Just print out what you want and place your plastic sheet over it to trace.

We tried using a plastic baggie, but it didn’t lay flat and caused the paint to pool together. So whatever kind of plastic you are using, tape down the edges to keep it nice and flat while the paint dries.

Also, don’t outline too thick or it will run. The paint makes the glue a bit runnier, so too much glue just creates a big blob!

Let Dry

This part is pretty important! We played around with adding in all the glue before it dried but it totally bled together and made a mess! Dry tiems varies depending on how warm your area is! You can create these on a foil lined cookie sheet and then move to a window with lots of light to dry! 12-24 hours depending on how thick the glue is!

Fill in Your Design

There are two different ways to fill in your suncatcher outlines.

Suncatcher technique number 1

Color in with sharpie. This gives you a nice transparent color to see through for you suncatchers. It has a more faux stained glass suncatcher feel.

BUT it doesn’t peel of the plastic sheet and instead needs to be cut out around. We just attached these to the window the tape.

You can hang these up and add crystal beads and make a suncatcher mobile concoction.

DIY Suncatcher technique number 2

Once your outline is dry, you can use different colors of glue to fill in your sun catchers! I think at this point, since the paint isn’t really see through, it’s considered a window cling but since the techqunies it the same, I wantd to share because it’s super fun!

You do have to let dry completely before peeling it off the plastic. To attach to the window, you need to lightly wet the backside and put it on the glass!

The front and back look totally different! The right is the side we put glue on. It spread and looks mostly orange. But when we peel it off, RAINBOW!

We even tried clear glue and it worked. It didn’t dry as flat and nice as regular glue but still a cool idea if you want to experiment with that! We thought about adding drops of food coloring into the elemers glue to make it colored but still see through!
