Celebrate Canada Day with your kids by creating a meaningful and fun Canada Day paper plate flag craft that honors this great country!

What is Canada Day?

Canada Day is a special holiday that celebrates the birthday of Canada! It marks the day in 1867 when Canada became a country.

On July 1st every year, people all over Canada have fun and celebrate with their friends and family. It’s like a big party for the whole country!

There are parades, fireworks, and lots of red and white decorations, which are the colors of the Canadian flag. It’s a day to feel proud of being Canadian and to enjoy the beautiful country we live in.

How to Celebrate Canada Day

Celebrating Canada Day is all about having fun and showing your love for Canada!

You can start by wearing red and white clothes, just like the colors of the Canadian flag. You can make fun crafts like paper flags or beaver puppets. Going to a local parade is exciting, and watching fireworks at night is super cool. You can also play games, have a picnic, or even go on a scavenger hunt.

Don’t forget to sing “O Canada” and maybe even have some maple syrup treats. It’s a day to celebrate with your family and friends and enjoy all the things that make Canada awesome!

Supplies Needed

  • Paper plate
  • Scissors
  • Red, paint
  • Paint brush
  • Red and white streamers
  • Double sided tape
  • Hole punch
  • String or pipe cleaners
  • Red construction paper

How to Make A Canada Day Paper Plate Flag Craft (step by step guide)

  1. Fold and cut a white paper plate in half. Measure the plate and divide it into three section. Use can use a pencil and ruler to create three equal sections. Paint the first and last section red. Save the other half for another craft. Once the half is painted, set it aside to dry.
  1. Cut white and red streamers between 12 and 15 inches long. You will need about five to six red and two or three white. Enough to cover the length of the paper plate.Once the paper plate is dry, measure and cut a piece of double sided tape and stick it on to the bottom or straight edge of the paper plate.
  1. Stick the red streamers below the red sections of the paper plate. Repeat with the white streamers.
  2. Use the maple leaf template to trace and cut out a maple leaf from red construction paper. Glue it to the middle of the white section.
  1. Using a hole punch punch a hole at the very top of the paper plate flag. Tie a piece of string through the hole. Hang your flag in a protected area outside where the wind can catch the streamers

Happy Canada Day!

TV Show: Curious Crafting

I’m so excited to share my crafting TV show Curious Crafting which launched in July 2022 on TVOkids and TVOkids YouTube! Season 2 aired in August 2023! My show was also nominated in 2023 for Best Live Action Preschool Series by the Youth Media Alliance Awards of Excellence.

Curious Crafting Season 1 is also now airing in Australia on ABC! Watch it here!

Set in the ultimate crafting space, Curious Crafting is a short form pre-school age series about the joy of making crafts. I lead a rotating cast of adorable little preschoolers (including my own) making magic out of common household objects.

In each episode we transform recycled items into magical crafts like a milk carton school bus, paper bag puppet or cotton pad turtle. The crafters learn and laugh their way through each activity while demonstrating what their young imaginations can create.

Curious Crafting shares the adventure and joy of making art with takeaway lessons for creating crafts at home.

This show designed for toddlers and preschoolers 2.5 years old and up.
