What is Earth Day?

Earth Day is a special celebration held on April 22nd each year. Created by EarthDay.org it is known to be the largest environmental movement on planet earth.

Earth Day events take place across the globe in 193 different countries with over 1 billion people participating. The organizers say “It’s not a day, it’s a movement.” They encourage participants to take the information that they learn on April 22nd and implement it all year long.

Earth Day History

The first Earth Day was held on April 22nd, 1970. Organized by Senator Gaylord Nelson, Congressman Pete McCloskey and activist Denis Hayes the first earth day was planned because of concern over the deteriorating environment in the United States. Environmental awareness had recently been elevated because of a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California.

The organizers were inspired by the student anti-war movement and they hoped to harness some of that energy into raising awareness about air and water pollution.

They held the first Earth Day on April 22nd because it was a weekday falling between Spring Break and final exams and they hoped they would receive the most student participation during that time.

Earth Day quickly caught the media’s attention and thousands of colleges and universities across the US participated. 20 million Americans were involved in coast to coast rallies and protests in support of Earth Day.

In 1990 the movement went global and has continued growing ever since. You can read more about the history of Earth Day here.

Earth Day Pledge Sheet Printable

Printable My Earth Day Pledge for kids

For my Earth Day Freebie I decided to create an Earth Day Pledge. This printable letter is a great way for children (and adults) to pledge that they will take care of the earth through changes they can make in their daily life.

Ideas include:

  • Recycling
  • Picking up litter
  • Conserving water
  • Caring for plants and trees
  • And other kids can do to take care of our planet.

This pledge would be wonderful as part of a larger classroom discussion on Earth Day and environmentalism or could be used at home for families who want to start making small changes in their life to show the planet a little love.
