Did you know that the most common vowel sound in the English language isn’t a long or short /e/? It’s actually the sound /uh/, just like the noise we make when we’re trying to think of a word. This sound, known as the schwa, is like a softer, weaker version of the short /u/. The schwa can be a bit tricky for students, often leading to confusion in spelling and reading. But don’t worry, we’ve got a fun solution to help with that!

Schwa Words Game

Star with some simple prep:

  • Print off game boards and word lists.
  • Use the blank word list to add your own words if you’d like.
  • Laminate the game board or pop it in a sheet protector.
  • Gather dry erase markers and a die.

How to Play the Schwa Sound Game

  • Roll the Die: Players take turns rolling a die.
  • Match the Number: The number rolled determines which word they can write with their marker. For instance, if a player rolls a 3, they look at the third word on the list, read it, and then write that word in the number three box.
  • Circle and Protect: If a player lands on a word already covered by their marker, they can circle it, protecting it from being bumped by an opponent.
  • Bump and Replace: If a player rolls a number that has a square occupied by their opponent (and not circled), they can “bump” their opponent off the square and replace it with their own writing, claiming that word.
  • Continue Playing: The game continues with players taking turns rolling the die, writing words, and circling them until all words on the grid are circled.
  • Winning: The player with the most circled words at the end of the game wins.
